While so many of us want to help and make a difference in the lives of others who are not as fortunate, we rarely take action. At Sciformix, we are lucky that our leaders have provided us the opportunity to reach out and impact our communities every year through our Social Impact Initiative (SII). The annual program gives our colleagues across the globe the chance to support a social cause and directly contribute to it. On May 13th 2016, we held the 4th edition of SII which saw over 900 colleagues participating across offices in the U.S., India and the Philippines. Sciformix employees supported 20 social service organizations, charitable trusts and social causes across our global locations.
In Mumbai, our volunteers visited the Jhanvi Charitable Trust that renders assistance to poor patients, the physically handicapped, orphans and less privileged children. It assists both directly and indirectly in rehabilitating women in distress, especially widows. The trust also provides monetary aid and humanitarian services in times of natural calamities. Volunteers also visited cancer patients in the TATA Memorial Hospital and brightened up their day. Other notable initiatives included visits to the Asha Dan Missionaries of Charity, Navjivan Vidyamandir and Animals Matter to Me (AMTM) Rehab Center.
In Pune, volunteers supported Mohor, a project run by Pune based NGO Swadhar. They helped paint the school and also donated essentials, clothes, toys and planned recreational activities to engage the children. Mohor is a Crèche and Day Care Centre for the children of commercial sex workers. Children between the ages of 6 months to 15 years are looked after and provided with a conducive environment for their growth and development along with basic health care, nutrition, recreation and education. At Niwara, an old age home our volunteers spent time with the elderly and entertained them with book reading and singing sessions. Other causes supported included the Door Step School – that supports slums and children from migrant workers, IDEA Foundation – where volunteers setup a medical camp for children from economically weak families and tree plantation activities across three locations in Pune.
In the United States, volunteer teams supported the AIDS Project in Worcester, MA where we cleaned the parking lot and helped them move furniture in their office. The AIDS Project Worcester is dedicated to ending the HIV/AIDS pandemic and fostering wellness through service, advocacy, prevention, education, and collaborative initiatives. They empower and enhance the lives of people infected and affected by HIV/ AIDS by fighting stigma and discrimination and through individualized services and best practices in a supportive, multicultural setting. In New Jersey we visited “Homefront” where we baked cookies for the kids and made cards for the families. Homefront’s mission is to end homelessness of the community and help families become self-sufficient.
In the Philippines, our volunteers supported the Gawad Kalinga Community Development Foundation which is helping to provide low cost housing for the economically weak. The foundation is leading the way in terms of poverty alleviation in the Philippines and has slowly become a nation-building movement. Its mission is to end poverty for 5 million families by 2024. Sciformix volunteers visited a community supported by Gawad Kalinga. They interacted with the families already living there and assisted the construction team that is building new homes in the community. Our volunteers helped in clearing debris, mixing cement and building the foundation and walls for the houses. They played games with children, gave out food, treats and donated school supplies. They also made a monetary donation to the Foundation which would be used to feed over 300 children in remote areas in the Philippines.
Our mission at Sciformix has always been of integrating our core values – integrity, commitment, focus, innovation, diversity, excellence and teamwork – into everything we do. By giving and volunteering, we embody that mission and commit to improving health, people’s lives and the communities in which we work.
SII gets bigger every year and we continue to support a range of social causes across the globe. However, no social impact is possible by only giving charity, making monetary and material donations. That’s too easy. It is harder and I believe much more fulfilling when you give time, your effort, and your emotions because you only truly give when you give of yourself. Each employee has their own personal story to share about how their lives were impacted by spending time with the various charities and individuals.
